Pairings that work — and ones that don't

Common questions
How many days do you need in Italy?+
Ten to fourteen days covers Rome, Florence, and Venice or one southern region without rushing. Seven days works for Rome and Florence only, or Rome and the Amalfi Coast with a Naples hub.
Do I need a visa for Italy?+
Italy is in the Schengen area — many nationalities visit visa-free for short stays. Rules depend on your passport — check official EU sources; we do not give visa advice.
Is Italy expensive?+
Mid-range on the ground runs roughly €90 to €115 per person per day excluding flights — Venice, Amalfi, and Lake Como cost more than Bologna or Turin.
What is the best month to visit?+
April to June and September to October suit Rome, Florence, and Venice. May to September fits coasts and islands. Sicily and Sardinia are pleasant into October.
Rome or Florence first?+
Either works — open-jaw into FCO and out FLR (or reverse) saves backtracking. Frecciarossa links the centres in about ninety minutes.
