Pairings that work — and ones that don't

Choosing cities is really choosing combinations, because the flight map between them is not what the road map suggests.

A first taste, a long weekend, or an open-jaw stopover.

    4 days
  • Lisbon + Porto

The standard two-city first trip without beaches.

    7 days
  • Lisbon + Porto + Lagos

Cities plus cliff coast without Madeira hop.

    10 days
  • Madeira + Lagosawkward

island flight versus mainland coast — route via Lisbon or Porto eating a travel day each way

    varies
  • Lisbon + Madeiraawkward

fine by flight — but do not combine with Algarve in one week without dropping a base

    varies
  • Porto + Lagosawkward

no quick link — fly from OPO to FAO or long drive via Lisbon

    varies
  • Évora + Madeiraawkward

inland Alentejo versus Atlantic island — fly from LIS only with two travel days minimum

    varies
  • Braga + Lagosawkward

opposite corners — train to Porto then fly south; not a same-day hop

    varies
  • Sintra + Lagosawkward

palace hills versus south coast — no direct link; route through Lisbon

    varies
  • Douro Valley + Albufeiraawkward

wine river versus party beach — fly FAO from Porto region minimum

Common questions

How many days do you need in Portugal?+

Ten to fourteen days covers Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve without rushing. Seven days works for Lisbon and Porto only, or Lisbon and one coast base.

Do I need a visa for Portugal?+

Portugal is in the Schengen area — many nationalities visit visa-free for short stays. Rules depend on your passport — check official EU sources; we do not give visa advice.

Is Portugal expensive?+

Mid-range on the ground runs roughly €75 to €95 per person per day excluding flights — cheaper than western Europe averages but August coastal peaks and Lisbon event weeks cost more.

What is the best month to visit?+

March to June and September to November suit Lisbon and Porto. May to September fits Algarve swimming. Madeira is mild most of the year — avoid levada days in heavy rain.

Lisbon or Porto first?+

Either works — open-jaw into LIS and out OPO (or reverse) saves backtracking. Train links the centres in about three hours.

Costs are research-based estimates, not live prices — verify before booking.
