What Cappadocia is actually like
Five things that make the rest of this page make sense — how the region is laid out and what actually decides a trip here.
It is a landscape, not a city
Cappadocia is a region of valleys and villages spread across Nevşehir province. You do not "walk to the sights" from one hotel — you hike trails, join tours, or drive between chimney clusters. Göreme is the practical hub; everything else is twenty minutes by road.
Balloons are the main event — and they cancel
Flights run at first light when wind is below operator limits. Cancellations are common, not exceptional. The rule every operator repeats: book your first morning, keep at least one spare morning, never book your departure day.
Cave hotels are real rooms, not gimmicks
Many hotels are carved into soft volcanic rock — cool in summer, warm in winter, occasionally claustrophobic if you pick the cheapest room. Read recent reviews for damp and ventilation, not just photos of the terrace.
Valleys beat viewpoints
The Instagram sunset spots fill with buses. The Red and Rose Valley trails between Göreme and Çavuşin give you the same rock without the crowd — go early or late, bring water, wear grippy shoes.
Underground cities are claustrophobic by design
Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu are impressive engineering — and narrow. Pick one, not both, on a short trip. Kaymaklı is closer to Göreme; Derinkuyu goes deeper if you want the more intense version.

Churches and mosques
Rock churches at open-air museums are heritage sites — no flash photography where signed, quiet voices, shoulders covered out of respect even when not enforced.
Balloon pick-up
Hotels have different pick-up times. Wait in the lobby five minutes early — the van will not wait for stragglers.
Tipping
Round up taxis and leave 10% at sit-down restaurants. Balloon pilots: tipping is optional, not expected.

Kayseri (ASR) has more flights; Nevşehir (NAV) is closer. Both are roughly 1–1.5 hours to Göreme by shuttle.
