City base, ruins day trip
Most visitors sleep in Izmir and day-trip to Ephesus — not the reverse. Selçuk is closer to the site but has fewer flights and less evening life. Two nights in Alsancak plus one Ephesus day is the standard pattern.
The Kordon is the city's living room
Bay-side promenade from Konak to Alsancak — cafés, joggers, sunset views. This is where Izmir feels most itself, not the traffic around the bus station.
Ephesus needs a full morning
The site is spread out and exposed. Budget three hours minimum on the marble streets, plus travel time. Afternoon in Şirince village is optional, not automatic.
Çeşme is a separate trip
The peninsula beaches are 80 km west — fine as an extra night in summer, not on a two-day Ephesus-focused plan.
Izmir is underrated for food
Boyoz pastry, kumru sandwiches and Aegean meze beat the generic kebab circuit. Kemeraltı market is the budget lunch laboratory.
